Yes! Our matcha is considered ceremonial grade, meaning it’s of a quality ideal for drinking and enjoying on its own or in lattes. It’s important to know that “ceremonial grade” is a term created for Western markets rather than an official grading used in Japan. In Japan, matcha quality is judged on factors like harvest time, leaf selection, color, aroma, and taste. We offer matcha that meets these high standards, as well as options that are less ceremonial in quality but still matcha you’ll love, and your budget will too.

Hojicha is matcha’s laid-back sibling. Instead of staying green, these Japanese tea leaves are roasted over charcoal, giving them a warm, toasty flavor with notes of caramel, nuts, and chocolate. Think of it as adult chocolate milk. The roasting process lowers the caffeine to about a third of what you’d find in matcha. This makes hojicha a great option for caffeine-sensitive sippers or anyone craving a latte that won’t keep them up past bedtime — unless you accidentally tell your friends how good it is and they keep calling you to hear more.

Matcha loves cool, dark, airtight places. Our tins have a snug silicone seal to lock in freshness, just close them tight after each use. For best results, keep matcha in the fridge. If you buy a larger bag, store most of it in the freezer and take out only what you’ll use in a week, keeping that portion in the fridge. This keeps the vibrant green color, smooth flavor, and aroma at their best, so every cup feels like your first sip of Matcha Bear magic.

Ceremonial grade is the matcha you bring out when you want the smoothest sip possible. It’s made from the youngest leaves, carefully stone-ground to create a soft, balanced flavor, rich umami, and a vibrant green that looks as good as it tastes. Culinary grade is more of a team player, slightly older leaves with a stronger flavor and a softer color, perfect for recipes, smoothies, and baked goods where matcha shares the spotlight. Different leaves, same love!

Think of matcha as the VIP of the green tea world, it gets special treatment from the very start. The tea plants are shaded before harvest to boost sweetness and color, the youngest leaves are hand-picked, de-stemmed, and then stone-ground into a fine powder. It’s a slow, careful process that takes more time and skill than regular green tea, kind of like the difference between instant coffee and a handcrafted espresso. You’re paying for the quality, freshness, and flavor that make matcha a whole different experience, and we make sure every scoop is worthy of the Matcha Bear Club name.

Matcha is loaded with feel-good perks. You’re getting a big dose of antioxidants (especially catechins like EGCG) to help fight off those pesky free radicals, plus L-theanine for calm, focused vibes and chlorophyll to help keep things fresh and clean on the inside. It’s also packing vitamins A, C, E, and K, along with minerals like potassium and magnesium. And thanks to its gentle caffeine paired with L-theanine, you get smooth, steady energy without the jitters or midday crash.
-
Matcha usually has about 30–40 mg of caffeine per serving, compared to roughly 90–100 mg in a standard cup of coffee, so about a third as much. But here’s the fun part: thanks to L-theanine, matcha’s caffeine is like the smooth operator of the energy world, releasing slowly for steady focus without the jitters or crash. Think of it as coffee’s chill cousin.
-
For a standard matcha latte, we recommend about 4-5 grams (≈ 2 teaspoons) for a 12–16 oz cup, and 2 grams (1 teaspoon) for usucha, matcha prepared straight with 2–3 oz water.
Tip: the bigger the cup, the more matcha you’ll need to keep the flavor and color strong, otherwise your latte will taste like milk pretending to be matcha. Keeping a good ratio ensures your matcha stays vibrant, flavorful, and balanced in every sip.
-
Ever notice how the second a matcha latte is in someone’s hand, they turn into a part-time bartender? It’s the unspoken rule of matcha. Matcha sinks as it sits, and a good shake keeps the matcha flowing through every sip.
Still curious?
Send your matcha questions our way at hi@matchabearclub.com and we’ll get back to you faster than you can whisk up your next latte. We promise we don’t bite, unless it’s into a matcha cookie.
